Stull/Phillips Family of Fayette County, PA and WV.
William P Scott, Hopwood, PA Updated 7/19/04My great-grandmother was Lulu STULL, born July 6, 1880 at Kingwood, Preston County WV. She was the daughter of Jefferson STULL and Anamilia "Molly" KISNER. The census says that Anamilia was born in West Virginia and that her mother was born in Maryland and father was originally from either West Virginia or Germany.
Jeff STULL was born in Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pa. in 1845. He was the oldest son of James and Sarah STULL. James was the son of Charles STULL. Charles was the son of Paul STULL, who had settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania before 1790. He and his family were living in Wharton Township in 1790.

Sarah b. 1802
Based on the birth years of Pauls offspring, it is very possible that he had a second wife, but I cant prove this. It could explain the seven year gap from 1787 till 1794 when there were no children. All that is known with any certainty is that 1790 census shows a total of four "Free white females" in the STULL household. The 1800 census shows two girls under ten, two between ten and sixteen, and a woman 45 or older. By 1810, only a girl under ten and a woman between 26 and 45 remain. The latter could be another wife or the oldest daughter still at home as she would have been 26 at the time, one of the two in the 1800 census. If there was no second wife, then Mary was 47 at the time of the birth of her last baby.
In 1850, James, Joseph, and Charles STULL were living next door to each other. In 1860, William, Charles, and Charles Sr. were living next door to each other. In 1870, William lived next door to James. Therefore Im assuming these were brothers and Charles Sr. was their father.

Joseph STULL had moved to Missouri by 1860.
By the late-1800s there were Stulls living in southern parts of Fayette, Greene, and Somerset counties and possibly these all have a common ancestor who settled in this area some time between 1760 and 1790. Although the STULLs in Fayette County were mainly based around Wharton and later Stewart townships, there was a 75 year old Thankful Stull living with Susanne and Mehala Stull in Youghiogheny Twp in 1850. Paul STULL, son of James, named one of his daughters Thankful. This is such an unique name that theres little doubt that the elder Thankful STULL was either Pauls grandmother, great-aunt, or some other close relative.
Jefferson Stulls mother, Anamilia KISNER was the daughter of Alpheus and Harriet, who were living in Marion Co. WV in 1860. They had married in Monongalia Co. WV on March 24, 1842. The family eventually moved to Indiana in the middle to late 1860s. Harriet was widowed by 1880.

Returning to Jefferson STULL, the 1880 census shows he was farming in the Reno District of Preston County, WV. This would fit with what my grandmother told me about her mother having been born in Preston in 1880. However, by 1900 the family was in Stewart Twp. The census of that year saying that of their five children, only two were living. Some time just after 1900, Anamile apparently passed away. By 1910, Jeff had a farm in Dunbar Township and Anamilia is not listed, but instead Sarah and several children - Henry, Olive, Samuel, Susie, Johnnie, and Nellie - are living with him. The census says Sarah had six children and all were living. Daughter Sarah who was in the household in 1900, had four children, but only one was living. It says she had been married five years, but no husband is shown. The 1910 census has Sarah listed as the wife of Jeff.

Lulu STULL married Sansom Everett PHILIPS sometime around 1900. My grandmother told me he was born in Rowlsburg, West Virginia in December 1859. The only place in the census records I could find Sansom is in the 1900 census of the Dry Fork District, Randolph County, West Virginia, where he is living in a boarding house - probably there working in a nearby coal mine. The census says that he and both of his parents were born in West Virgina. It also says that he had been married for 22 years. It appears, therefore, that Sansom had a marriage previous to that with Lulu STULL. This is more likely given the fact that he was 21 years older than her. I dont think my grandmother knew anything about her father possibly having another family. In fact, she told me she never met anyone on her fathers side of the family and knew almost nothing about them.

Sansom Essey b. May 21, 1907, Gormania, WV, d. Feb. 24, 1962, Newark, NJ.
Mary F. b. Sept. 16, 1910, Potomac Manor, WV, d. Sept. 28, 2001, Uniontown, Pa.
Nora b. July 3, 1913, Potomac Manor, WV.
Hazel married Jason HELMICK and had one son, Harlan, who was born October 16, 1930. He died due to an illness when he was only 6 years old on June 24, 1936. Husband Jason was born November 11, 1897 and died on January 21, 1960.
Essey married Dorothy PARSONS and had two daughters: Doris Jean, born August 21, 1936 and Mamie Hazel, born October 08, 1938.
Nora had one son: Raymond, born May 02, 1932.
My grandmother, Mary F. PHILIPS SCOTT, mentioned in a letter to me a number of years ago that during the years she was growing up, her family had moved to Blaine, W.Va., back to Potomac Manor, then to Peewill Hill, Md., then to Oakmont, W.Va., then back to Potomac Manor. Later they moved to Hampshire, W.Va. and back to Potomac Manor. Ill take a moment to mention that such moving around often probably wasnt unusual for coal miners in those times on the Potomac River, since opportunities for work came and went as mines were either opened or closed. The towns were rather close together and typically sprang up around an individual mine. When the coal started to run out, the town generally went into decline as the people moved via the railroad to the next mining town. Many of these towns along the upper Potomac river were connected only by a rail line or foot path since the towns often didnt last long enough to build roads. Some of the better established towns still exist, but the smaller mining camps gradually were de-populated and eventually abandoned. Now these are ghost towns or have disappeared virtually without a trace.
My grandmother commented to me in a letter concerning these numerous moves: "I dont know the dates of all the moves. I guess you moved to have work and live in the (coal) companys house. There wasnt cars back then or roads to travel on." She told me her father had been a member of a couple of fraternal organizations that existed in Potomac Manor and possible some of the other towns. She said he was a good father, but was very strict. Unfortunately, after a period of illness, Sansom PHILIPS, died in 1921 of kidney problems and was buried in the Hamilton Cemetary in Kitzmiller, Md.
In 1923, Lulu married Frank TAYLOR, born Oct. 19, 1865, Crab Bottom, Hiland Co., Va. and died Sept. 4, 1953 at Hopwood. He was a shoemaker by trade. After marrying, the family moved to Bayard, W.Va. in March of 1923, then to Confluence, Pa. and to Elco, Pa. From there to Connellsville, Pa., then to Thomasdale, which at that time was across the river from Summerfield, Pa. (The town was demolished when the Yough damn was built in 1948. When the water is low the old Summerfield bridge is visible.) She went to grade school in Jockey Hollow about a half mile from Thomasdale. From there they moved to Lemont Furnace, Pa.
Later, Frank TAYLOR moved the family to Leonard, Texas., then to Kirbyville, Texas, probably due to the oil boom that was happening in Texas in that time. Nonetheless, they moved back to Lemont in 1926, and finally to Hopwood, Pa. in 1931. My grandmother told me they traveled by train to Texas, but rode on a flatbed truck back to Pennsylvania. She used to remark that it always seemed like just about when Frank TAYLOR got his shoemaking business established and started making some money, he would suddenly pack up the family and move somewhere else.
Not too long after arriving back in Hopwood, she met W. Henry SCOTT. They married in 1934 and had two sons: William E. and Robert H.
An old journal entry says that Lulu and Frank were in Winchester, Va. on February 1938. Unknown if this was a visit or whether they reloated there.
Lulu and Frank TAYLOR are buried in the Hopwood Cemetary.
