William P. Scott, Hopwood, PA
Updated 7/19/04
Based upon the best information available, it is most likely that my great-great grandfather, Walter Scott, originally came from Juniata Township in Perry County, PA.. His parents were William Scott and Elizabeth Yohn. William was a sawyer and millwright and in his later years was a farm manager. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jacob Yohn, b. 1797, and Margaret Paden, b. 1798.
I believe Walter's grandfather, William, was born in Adams County. Walter's great-grandfather was also named William. He died in Adams Co. PA.

Walter's grandfather William had moved from Adams County to Perry County by the early 1800s.
In Perry County, the Scotts were presumably members of the Middle Ridge Presbyterian church located on Middle Ridge Road. It was one of the first churches in Perry County and was built in 1804 by Scotch-Irish settlers. The congregation was dispersed in 1842. William Scott is buried at the Old Middle Ridge Cemetary.

After the Civil War Walter married a woman named Jennie, b. 1840, and they were living in Perry County in 1870. I do not know what happened to Jennie or whether they had any kids.
Family tradition has it that Walter came to Fayette County with two brothers, but they stayed only a short time before continuing west. Walter's two brothers, Willis and Ulysses, did, in fact, move to Iowa, but it is unknown if they actually came with Walter or went independantly at some other time.
In any case, Walter married Mary Matilda Emerson of Hopwood, daughter of William Emerson and Matilda Anne Shaw, in 1877.

In 1880, Walter and Mary had two daughters, Rowena and Bertha, and were living in Wilkins, Allegheny Co., Pa., outside Pittsburgh. They had a son in 1882, William Morgan, but apparently, Bertha died sometime along the way. Family legend is they operated "Scott's Store" in Dunbar, Pa., but eventually moved to Hopwood where Walter died in 1885, only months before his last son, Thomas, was born. Uncle Tom thought that Thomas F. was born in a house across the road from the Emersons on Bennington Road.
Walter reportedly had a Scott family Bible and this was kept in my great grandmothers possession until it was lost in the 1950s. I was told by my grandmother that Walter's son, Thomas needed the Bible to prove his birthdate at the Social Security office. The Bible was said to be in bad shape with the back cover gone and was put in a Redstone candy box for protection by my great-grandmother Savilla (aka "Granny Scott") when she gave it to him. Time passed and the Bible never returned. Thomas died in the early 1961 and the matter of getting the Bible back was apparently forgotten. Inquiries in the late 1980s by William E. Scott to one of Thomas' daughters who was quite elderly and living in Zepher Hills, Florida were unproductive. Hopefully one day that old Bible will be found and we can have access to the information it contains. Thomas E. Scott, recalls that the family information contained in the Bible was written in what he called "English script."
Walter Scott died on December 4, 1884 according to his widow Mary's marriage license to Ben Mauler. Family tradition was that his death was from cancer or "stomach problems". He is buried in the Emerson family cemetary on Bennington Road in Hopwood. The only thing known about Walter's physical description is that he was apparently rather tall. Thomas E. Scott told me that his grave is one of the longest in the family cemetary. In 2000, I came across a stone at the cemetery with the barely legible initials "WFS" carved into it. I presumed this to be Walter's gravestone.
Rowena married Zar Dennis married on April 1, 1893 and lived in Point Marion. In 1910 they were living in German Township.

In the 1910 census, Thomas F. Scott is shown as married and living in Fairchance. His wife's name is Jennie. They married in 1904. She had had two children, but only one was living, a two year-old daughter, Lucille. Lucille eventually married a man named Shank and lived in Uniontown.

Thomas F. had several occupations. He was a barroom bouncer, a policeman in Fairchance, Pa. and eventually painting contractor around Pittsburgh. In later years he lived in Tynesta, Pa.
After Walter's death, Mary married Benjamin Mauler on November 12, 1887 and had five daughters to him. Ben Mauler's parents were James and Mary.

In 1900, Thomas Scott was living with his mother and Ben Mauler in South Union Township.
Mary Emerson Scott Mauler's obituary says she was a member of the Baptist Church in Connellsville, but Rev. Leland of the Methodist church in Hopwood officiated at her funeral at the Hopwood Cemetary. Three daughters had preceded her in death. She had 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren at the time of her death. Oddly, her sister, Emma Jane Emerson Mackey died the very next day.
The 1900 census shows William Morgan living with his uncle Thomas and grandmother Anne Emerson at the Emerson home in Hopwood. My great-uncle, Thomas E. Scott, said that he had heard that Tom and Anne needed help with their farm, so Mary Matilda sent Morgan to live with them.
Morgan continued to live in the house and in 1908 he moved his new wife, Savilla Patton, daughter of Henry Patton and Mollie Fuller of Grantsville, Md.(see Patton family history), into the home. Property records from 1915 show that Morgan took title to the house and property from Tom Emerson and the heirs of the children of William F. Tillie Maust (widow of George W. Emerson) and husband, William and wife Ella Emerson, George and wife Carrie Emerson, Edith Worthington (daughter of George W.) and husband,.
