Thomas PATTON* (1790-Oct. 20, 1867) is the earliest PATTON ancestor known. Naturalization Records from Somerset County 1812-1819 show he was born in 1790 in County Derry, Ireland, from whence he migrated in 1807. He filed plans to settle in Pa. on Feb. 28, 1818. Once here, he married Eve WEIMER (1809-Sept 1, 1848) on Nov. 21, 1824. They were married by "Squire " Michael Dively. Eve’s parents were Martin Weimer (1738-1815) and his wife whose last name was TROUTMAN. Eve is buried in the old cemetary at Salisbury, PA. Headstone lists her as "consort" of Thomas. After Eve died Thomas PATTON moved to Kingwood, WV where he died in 1867.

Elijah PATTON married Sarah WEIMER on Jan. 22, 1854 by Jacob Lichty of the German Brethern Church, Somerset County. Sarah's parents - Joseph WEIMER (1/29/1806- 3/17/1874) and Eliza (KOONTZ) Weimer (3/25/1810-9/2/1871) They were married on 1/1/1829. Both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetary. Joseph Weimer's parents: John WEIMER (born 7/14/1740 (Germany) died 1/24/1813) and Susanna Weimer (5/7/1741-1/27/1813) married 1761.

Cyrus PATTON (August 28, 1831-April 6, 1865) married Catherine DIEHL (Jan. 3, 1835-Jul 23, 1910) in 1855 in Somerset County, PA. Catherine was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Her siblings were born in America. Her parents were Conrad DIEHL (January 28, 1806-October 27, 1881) and Mary ? (October 14, 1808-May 18, 1888). They were married in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Conrad died in Garrett County, MD and buried in St. John’s Lutheran Church cemetary. Mary is bured there also. They had the following children: Catherine, Henry, Mary, and William.

Cyrus and Catherine had two children:

Cyrus PATTON enlisted as a sargent and was a Lt. with the 54th Pa. Volunteers when he was killed in action April 6, 1865 during the Battle of High Bridge, Va.. He is buried at Poplar Grove Cemetary, Petersburg, VA. Grave #150. Cyrus is listed on the Civil War Statue located in front of the Somerset County Courthouse.

He was a blacksmith by trade

After Cyrus died, Catherine married John William Platter (1843-?) on March 18, 1869 at Winding Ridge, MD. The ceremony was performed by Pastor P. Green (From Somerset County) and the wedding was at the brides residence in Alleghany County (now Garrett County). Walter William Platter is the only child known.

John's parents were from the same area of Germany (George & Mary Platter {Blatter}) and they arrived in America around 1815.

In the 1870 Census, Catherine and John are living on Keysers Ridge, a tract of land known as Hard Struggle (149.5 acres) that was purchased December 9, 1871 and sold April 1, 1874. The sale was certified by the Justice of the Peace, Sylvanus Butler on April 6, 1874.

The 1910 Census for Elk Lick Twp PA listed the following concerning Catherine: can't read or write; married 40 years; gave birth to 8 children, only 2 lived; born in Germany; parents born in Germany.

Cyrus’ son, Henry Ambrose PATTON (Mar. 21, 1856-Aug. 3, 1936) of Somerset Co., Pa, married Mary (Mollie) Elizabeth FULLER (June 27, 1880-May 14, 1929) of Garrett Co., MD, on June 27, 1880 at Grantsville. Both are buried in Grantsville, MD cemetary. They had the following children:

Mollie Fuller’s parents were Hiram Bennett FULLER (December 26, 1838-1910) and Elizabeth WERNER (August 1834 - ?). She was born on Germany. Hiram and Elizabeth married September 10, 1859 in MD. Hiram was born in PA and died in MD. They had the following children: Mary, Catherine, Emma, Henry, Lewis, Ella, John, Maggie, Charles, and Outis.

Hiram’s parents were Henry FULLER (January 7, 1800-March 23, 1881) of Frederick County, MD. and Drusilla SHOCKEY (May 7, 1805-July 24, 1881) of Salisbury, PA. They were married in 1820. They had the following children: Elijah, Isaiah, Elisha, Matilda, Angeline, Henry, Cecilla, Rachel, Hiram, Hamilton, Edward, and Margaret.

Drusilla’s parents were Christian SHOCKEY (September 10, 1754-April 18, 1829) of Franklin County, PA and Mary Ann WELCH (August 19, 1757-January 2, 1844) of Hagerstown, MD. They married September 1784 in Hagerstown. They had the following children: Valentine, William, Christian, Mary, Abraham, Barbara, Levi, Margaret, Nancy, and Drusilla.

Christian SHOCKEY was a soldier of the Revolution. He enlisted April 7, 1777 in the 11th Regiment, Continental Line. He also fought with the 1st, 6th, and 11th Pennsylvania Regiments under Generals Sullivan and Wager; Colonels Thomas Hartley, Adam Hubley, and Thomas Brelig. He attained the rank of Corporal and was discharged 1783. He was a pensioner under the act of March 24, 1800 and later acts. Military service included the battles of Wyoming Valley in 1779, Cowpens, Yorktown and Trenton. He was severely wounded in the battle of Cowpens when he deflected a sword attack by a British soldier with his arm, nearly severing it, before killing his enemy with a bayonet. He was also wounded at Yorktown. In 1805, he and Mary moved to Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He farmed and taught school until his death. He famous due to his war service and was an influential person in the community.

Christian Shockey’s parents were John Christopher SHOCKEY (Johan Christoffel SCHAKE) and a woman named Barbara (?-1772). He arrived in the United States through the port of Philadelphia aboard the snow "Molly" on September 10, 1737. He took the oath of allegiance that same day. He married Barbara in 1738. In December 4, 1740, John sold 100 acres of land in Bucks County Pa. Then he obtained 1800 acres in Franklin County Pa., which he later sold and then bought 300 acres in Westmoreland County Pa. He died in 1796 in Westmoreland County Pa. He and Barbara had the following children: Christian, Valentine, Elizabeth, John Aron, Barbara, Magdelene, Jacob, Issac, and Abraham.

Henry A. PATTON was born in Somerset County Pa., in either Larimer or Greenville Township. The 1860 Census (taken July 11, 1860) listed his first name as AMBROSE. Although it can't be determined when Henry moved back to Maryland, he is listed in the 1870 Census for Allegany County as living with his mother and step-father. His occupation is listed as FARMWORKER.

One story he told was that as a child he walked from Winding Ridge to Cumberland to see his father who was stationed there during the Civil War. This information was verified by the know war records for his father, Cyrus.

Also, the area in Allegany County (now Garrett County) where his grandmother, Mary Diehl, lived is known as Winding Ridge.

In the 1880 Census for Addison Pa, Henry is listed as a boarder, living with Elizabeth Leston (or Liston) Teston. His occupation is listed as Farm Worker.

When he and Mollie were first married, they lived in Pennsylvania. Prior to the 1890 Census they moved back into Maryland.

He later worked for the Castleman Valley Railroad, which hauled wood from Jennings into Pennsylvania.

Savilla Catherine PATTON (March 14,1888-April 24,1960) married William Morgan SCOTT (August 9, 1882-November 19,1949) on April 3,1907 and had the following children:
