Dyer/Emerson/Scott Family Line of Maryland, PA, and WV.

William P. Scott, Hopwood, PA

Updated 7/19/04

This family line I’ve traced back to the Patrick DYER family of Maryland. The Dyers are claimed to have originated in Wiltshire England and Tottenham in North London. Patrick’s parents are unknown. He may have been the son of Thomas DYER who immigrated to America in 1664. Other persons named DYER who came to Maryland during the 1600s who may be connected are Edward in 1668, Malligo, Margaret, and Mary in 1677, Peter in 1665, and Roger, a servant, in 1675-80. There was also a William DYER in the area in 1661 and a John DYER in 1669.

Patrick DYER and Comfort BARNES were members of the Church of England and were married on October 12, 1702 at the Piscataway Parish in Prince George’s County, Maryland. They had eight children, all born in Piscataway.

Patrick died in 1724 and his estate was administered by Thomas EDELEN. His widow Comfort later married Edelen.

Comfort’s son William DYER was bound to Thomas EDELEN and he agreed to teach him a trade as per the court in 1711.

Edelen raised the DYER children and left a considerable part of his estate to them and their mother. His estate included five thousand acres, homes, and a small number of negroes.

Comfort BARNES DYER EDELEN died in 1760. Her will was written May 10, 1760 and probated September 20, 1760. She left 20 shillings to each of son William Dyer’s children. He being dead by this time.

A 1776 census of Prince George’s County shows that Susanna DYER, 75, had one female, 29; her sons 28, 27; and 4 negroes.

Penelope DYER married John EMERSON, son of John and Mary EMMERSON of Prince George's County, Maryland. John and Mary had the following children in addition to John:

John

Richard

Elizabeth

Lucy

George

Elender (Elianor).

In the 1776 Census of Maryland:

John EMMERSON married to Penelope DYER. Four of their children were baptised at St. John's Parish in Prince George's County, MD are James, William, John and Henry. These are not their only children.

Richard is the 34 year old male living with his 70 year old father in the 1776 Maryland Census. The age of the person is the age they were as of their last birthday when the census was taken. This places Richard's birth around 1742. Richard's sister Lucy, age 20 is also living in the home along with a 13 year old male an 18 year old female and one male slave (Bryon).

Elizabeth, age 40, is listed with her husband John HALLEY, age 37 and their four sons, ages 10,8, 4 and 1 and their four daughters, ages 14, 12, 7 and 2.

Lucy is shown living with her father. She was born March 8, 1754 and is listed in the St. John's Episcopal Church Records. She would actually be 22 in 1776. Census records can be off a year or two, depending when the person's last birthday occurred.

George marries Mary and they have children Mary, John and Richard baptised in St. John's Episcopal Church.

Elender (Elianor) is listed in the census as age 18, her husband James King TAYLOR is 28. They have a 6 month old infant.

Richard's father John dies in 1777, just a year after this census was taken. The property is dispersed among the siblings. Richard is only given six head of sheep and one cow and two young heffers and one bed and furniture. The land is dispersed to George and Elianor who also end up being the executors of the will.

In 1782, we see Richard EMMERSON show up for the first time in Fairfax County, Virginia. This would make sense since he no longer had anywhere to live since his father died.

There are no other Emmersons that show up in Fairfax County, Virginia until 1820 when your Aquilla makes his appearance there moving up from Upper Marlborough, Prince George's County, Maryland. This is also the year that EMMERSON records begin to show up at St. Paul's Episcopal Parish in Alexandria, Virginia.

James, William, John and Henry were baptised at St. John's Parish in Prince George's County, Maryland.

William and John EMMERSON, sons of John and Penelope EMMERSON, married two SIMPSON girls from the Simpson family that also attended St. John's Episcopal Church. Aquilla married another. Their marriage dates fall within dates brothers would have married according to their ages - William to Mary Ann SIMPSON in 1789, John to Rebecca SIMPSON in 1790, Aquilla to Susanna SIMPSON in 1792 and Henry marries Elizabeth BADEN in 1795. These marriages all took place in St. John's Episcopal Parish in Prince George's County, Maryland.

During the Revolutionary War, James EMERSON was a Private in Capt. Hezekiah Wheeler’s Company, 11th Militia Battalion and also served in Wheeler’s Select Militia and the Maryland Line. This according to an affidavit by his son, Elisha D. EMERSON, as filed from Fayette Co., PA on September 7, 1852.

James EMERSON and Elizabeth NORTHEY had at least three sons and a set of twin girls in Maryland:

1. John, b. 1789, MD., d. Hopwood, PA, b. Emerson Family cemetary

2. Penceley, b. June 1792, Md.

3. Priscilla, b. June 1792, Md.

4. James Shadrach, b. 1794, Md, d. WV, m. Elizabeth MITCHELL (Record at the Mormon genealogy site had Shadrach listed as James Shadrach Emerson).

5. Elisha, b. 1804, m. Margaret Kerr, d. Pa.

After the Revolutionary War, the John and father James EMERSON moved from Maryland to Martinsburg, VA and lived there for 13 years before moving to Hopwood, then called Woodstock, in 1816. Other brothers who either moved to Martinsburg previously or came with him. Since there is no indication of the twin girls coming to PA, they may have married in Martinsburg and remained there.

Around the time the Emersons arrived in Pa., Moses HOPWOOD, the son of the founder of the town in 1791, was expanding it and changed the name from Woodstock to MONROE. The name change was at the request of his personal friend, the soon to be president, James MONROE, who happened to be passing through at that very time.

I'll mention for the sake of any future research that there is speculation that the Emersons had some connection or family relationship with the Hopwoods, which explains why the Emersons first came to the area, but I have no confirmation on this. One story I heard is that the Emersons had land in MD adjacent to that of either George WASHINGTON or John HOPWOOD. Its well known that John HOPWOOD was a top aide to George WASHINGTON during the Revolutionary War.

Another rumor is that an Emerson had been a wagon driver on one of Washington's trips to the area. In any case, I do remember that my grandfather, Henry SCOTT, used to be emphatic that some relative of ours had married the "daughter of John HOPWOOD." I mention this since I have found that most family legends or rumors often have some nugget of truth, but typically the facts get distorted as the story is passed down. Therefore, I wouldn’t be surprised if there might indeed be some family connection between the Hopwoods and Emersons, but I don’t think its actually through any of the daughters of the John Hopwood who founded the town that presently bears his name. My searches into the HOPWOOD family have turned up no such connection between anyone in my family and any known daughters of John HOPWOOD. My guess is there may be some personal connection between the HOPWOOD family and EMERSON family that could be the reason why the Emersons came to Hopwood, but as of this writing I have not been able to confirm any.

In any case, Hopwood’s location for his town was fortuitous, since by 1816 and the years immediately following, Hopwood, or Monroe as it was then known, was a real boom town due to the remarkably heavy traffic of cattle being driven to market, covered wagons carrying goods, gangs of slaves being moved from Virginia to Kentucky, and people of doubtless every description and destination on the newly created National Road. History books say that on any given evening there were acres of covered wagons and thousands of head of livestock that had arrived in Hopwood for a stop-over in preparation for, or just returning from, the arduous journey over the mountain. As a consequence, a number of stone inns and general stores sprang up. A trip hammer forge was in operation and also a flour mill, wagonmaking, and a substantial comb manufacturing operation were in place. So important was the town to the area’s commerce during those early years that a serious effort was made to change the county seat from Uniontown to Monroe.

James, John and James Shadrach EMERSON first appear on Fayette County, Union Twp. tax records in 1816. Elisha was only twelve at that time and the 1820 census shows him living with his parents. James Shadrick married Elizabeth MITCHELL (b. 1801) and lived for a while in Fredrick township. In 1829 they moved to Preston County WV and lived on their son Mitchell Emerson’s farm. The 1817 Union Township tax records show only James EMBERSON, who probably bought land first. In 1819 only John and Shadrach (Shadrick) are listed. The 1830 Pa. Census shows James and John in Union Township. This census also shows the James EMERSON household consisting of one male between 20 and 30, one male between 70 and 80, and one female between 60 and 70- the youngest man is presumably Elisha as his age would have been right. James Emerson died in 1836. The 1840 Census has John and Elisha listed on consecutive pages indicating that they lived close together.

In any case, shortly after arriving from Maryland, John EMERSON married Anne CONN who was born in was to be the Fairchance area in Fayette County Pennsylvania. Her father was William CONN (1774-1850) who was the son of George CONN. The Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Fayette County, Pennsylvania mentions that George CONN "was a ship carpenter who in 1759 came from Hagerstown, Maryland, and took up 400 acres of land on Georges Creek under what was known as a ‘tomahawk right.’ About 1760 a man by the name of Powell settled on a part of this tract and disputed the ownership of the same with CONN. They agreed to settle their quarrel by a fight. They fought near a spring. CONN was victorious and held the land. The spring has been known ever since as ‘Powell Spring.’ George CONN was one of the Georges for which Georges Township is named. His wife's name was Lydia FLINTHAM. They reared nine children, seven sons and two daughters." Son William Conn’s wife was named Sarah.

John EMERSON and Anne had the following children: William F., Alfred, George W., Joshua H., Mary, John, Jordon R. and probably more. Records show that William had a brother close to his age that appeared in the household as an unnamed male child in the 1830 Census. It also looks like John and Anne possibly had two older daughters that show up as unnamed female children in the 1830 and 1840 censuses, but, like William and the older brother, were probably married and out of their parent’s house by the time the 1850 Census was taken in which children’s names are listed and positive identification could be made.

John’s oldest son, William F. EMERSON, my great-great-great grandfather, married Matilda Ann SHAW, the daughter of Samuel SHAW and Elizabeth WEBSTER of Preston County, W. Va., around 1844. The Shaws are reported to have originated from Ireland and came through York county in Pennsylvania to Preston at an early date. Samuel SHAW was the son of William SHAW, and his brother, Benjamin, was a colonel in the militia and a representative in the Virginia legislature. Another brother, Alexander, never came to Preston. Elizabeth’s father was James WEBSTER, who lived in Sugar Valley in Preston in 1792 and was a soldier in the War of 1812. When his wife died, he gave Elizabeth to a CONNER family to be reared.

William and Matilda EMERSON had the following children: David, Alfred, Elizabeth Ann, George Washington, Elisha Deyer, Mary Matilda, and Thomas E. Since Matilda SHAW was from Preston County and Shadrick EMERSON also lived there. Therefore I think it likely that William met Matilda while on a visit to Shadrick’s home. Another thing is that several of the Conns moved to Preston Co.. And there’s one family story that Tom EMERSON told about his grandmother Anne and his mother Matilda, riding a horse to West Virginia to get a deed signed by some relative. So it may have been that William EMERSON met Matilda SHAW while visiting some of his relatives in Preston County. With uncles on both his mother’s and father’s side of the family living in Preston, there was arguably any number of reasons why he would have been visiting that area.

The 1880 Preston Co. WV census shows Elisha EMBERSON at the home of his grandfather James SHAW.

Fayette County property records show that William EMERSON obtained land from the Catherine HICKLE estate in 1878. From George W. EMERSON in 1878, and from his father John Emerson’s estate in 1880.

George W. EMERSON (William’s brother) married a Harriet M. and property records show that in 1883 he bought a property in South Union Township from Marion BROWNFIELD. The Brownfield’s had substantial land holdings in the area at that time.

William’s oldest son, David EMERSON, was drafted into the Union army and dispatched from Pittsburgh during the Civil War. The story I got from Wylene EMERSON of High Island, Texas was that he deserted at least twice and was eventually mustered out of the military in Leavenworth, KS at the end of the war with pay. According to her research, David EMERSON was listed as deserting the first time from the Union camp at Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia and was gone for several months. Military records attest that officers there were complaining of serious problems with sickness due to dampness and shortages of medicine and decent food. Family members in Hopwood do vaguely recall hearing a story about one of the EMERSON boys who had supposedly returned home from the war for several months to recuperate from sickness or war wounds. So far only David is known to have been in the army. Based on this information, I think its entirely possible that David EMERSON became ill, left the bad situation at Harper’s Ferry, and came back to Hopwood for some months before returning to the Army. The fact that he was paid a clothing allowance upon his discharge at the end of the war, however, indicates that he wasn’t in prison at Leavenworth for desertion or anything like that, but was mustered out under normal circumstances. During the war the Army often sent soldiers who were desertion risks out west to fight Indians. In any case, at the end of the war David EMERSON apparently took his final pay and traveled to Iowa where he married Almeda BLEVINS. Then they lived in Nebraska for a while and eventually settled in Oklahoma. Wylene claims that after living in Iowa for a number of years, however, David returned for a short time to Pennsylvania in 1878 where his daughter, Adeline, was born before the family went to Nebraska. This is based upon some census record Wylene has from Oklahoma or Nebraska, which indicates one of David’s children was born in Pennsylvania.

Children of David EMERSON and Almeda BLEVINS:

Thomas EMERSON, b. December 02, 1882, Fremont Co., Ia.; d. April 07, 1936, Dillard, Carter Co, Ok; m. Cora Estelle CARPENTER, November 10, 1900, Hico, Hamilton Co., TX.; b. June 05, 1883, Hico, Hamilton Co., Texas; d. October 17, 1956, Wilson, Carter Co., Oklahoma.

Returning to the Emersons in Fayette County, Elizabeth EMERSON, daughter of William, is said to have gone west to Kansas sometime after the Civil War. The circumstances by which she got there are not known. Most likely would have been that she married a local man and went with him to stake out land that the government was making available. However, that may not have been the case, since my great-uncle Tom SCOTT seems to recall hearing that Elizabeth went west with her brother David. One scenario that would resolve the rumors and information concerning Elizabeth and David would be as follows: David was discharged from the Army in Kansas; married Almeda BLEVINS and had several children in Nebraska; returned to Hopwood for a short time with his family; had one child born here in 1878; then left again for the west with his sister Elizabeth (Elizabeth ended-up in Kansas and David went to Iowa or Oklahoma). In any event, there seem to be no question that Elizabeth did go west, since her younger brother, Tom EMERSON, is known to have spoken to his nephews about Elizabeth’s family having "big wheat fields out in Kansas." Apparently contact was maintained for some period.

Mary Matilda EMERSON, my great-great grandmother, married Walter F. SCOTT around 1880 and had four children: Thomas F., Rowena, Bertha, and William Morgan. Bertha died in childhood. Walter died unexpectedly in 1885 of "stomach problems", a couple of months before Thomas was born. Some time later Mary remarried Benjamin MAULER and eventually had five daughters to him. (See Scott notes.)

In addition to the present house on Bennington road that was built from logs by the Emersons in 1860 and stoned over in the 1940s, there was at least one and possibly two other Emerson houses up the road. This would agree with census records of those years that show more than one EMERSON family living next to each other. A surveyor’s map of Hopwood made around 1870 shows William living in what’s now the stone house and his mother living up the road in a house located below the family cemetery. Further more my father recalls an old well and some ruins that he was told were the remains of a long-gone EMERSON house that may have been between these two. The older house probably belonged to John and Ann and later Joshua and may have been this house that eventually burnt down. Everett EMERSON of Winchester, Va. said that he was told that the house in which his grandfather, John Deyer, and his great uncle, William, were growing up burned when they were boys. This might explain why John Deyer and William, the sons of Joshua EMERSON and Margaret KERR, are found in the 1870 Census to be living with their grandmother, Anne. This makes me think there might have even been three houses at one time - one each for William, Anne, and Joshua. There is one rumor that the stone house, which was at that time a log cabin, was originally further up the road - closer to the cemetary, but for some reason was torn down and moved to its present location. Its been suggested that maybe the well went bad.

In the 1870 Census, several pages after William are John’s brother, Elisha, 66, and wife Margaret EMERSON 67, both of whom were born in Md.. Elisha’s occupation is listed as farmer and Justice of the Peace. Tax records show his land was valued at $2500, which was well above average for that time. In comparison, William Emerson’s land was valued at $250. Typical families in the area are shown having between $150 and $500 in land. The Census says Elisha’s wife and children were born in MD. This conflicts, however, with tax records that show Elisha EMERSON as a single man in the area in 1826. Also Elisha obviously was too young to have had a family while still in Maryland. It is possible that the census is in error and his children were actually born in Pa. Also Margaret may have had a previous marriage.

Several pages in the 1870 Census past Elisha are his son and daughter-in-law Aquilla, 31, and Ellen SPRINGER 24, with Amanda, 4, and Springer, 2. Since this family of Emersons is shown living next to a SPRINGER family .

In 1884 Aquilla EMERSON moved his family to the Dakota territory settling at Freeman, but after a year removed to Yankton. In their family were eight children, those besides the subject of this review being: Amanda Jane, now the wife of Rasmus Peterson, of Yankton county; Springer, who is engaged in the dray and transfer business at Calexico, California; John, a horse dealer at White Owl, South Dakota; Milton R., a farmer of Moscow, Idaho; Joseph, engaged in the dairy business with his brother Frank; Steve, who is connected with the Guernsey Seed Company of Yankton; and Mrs. Ellery Dunn, of Yankton.

The last EMERSON who lived in the stone house was Thomas, who never married. My great-uncle, Thomas E. SCOTT, said there came a time when William’s widow Matilda and son Tom EMERSON needed help with their farm. Mary Matilda SCOTT (EMERSON), who had married to Benjamin MAULER after the death of Walter SCOTT, sent William Morgan SCOTT (My great-grandfather), to live with Matilda and Tom to help with their farm work. This explains why 1900 census records shows him living with the Emersons.

Morgan continued to live in the house and in 1908 he moved his new wife, Savilla PATTON, daughter of Henry PATTON and Mollie FULLER of Grantsville, Md. (see Patton family history), into the home. Property records show that in 1915 William Morgan SCOTT took title to the house and property from Tom EMERSON and the heirs of the other children of William F.EMERSON - Tillie MAUST (widow of George W. EMERSON) and husband, William and wife Ella EMERSON, George and wife Carrie EMERSON, Edith WORTHINGTON (daughter of George W.EMERSON) and her husband,.

Thomas Emerson’s brother, Deyer (Dire) EMERSON, who apparently lived in the area, came to help with the farm work too. One old photo we have taken around 1913 in the field on Bennington Road shows two men identified as Tom and Deyer leading plow horses with Savilla PATTON SCOTT and my grandfather, Walter Henry SCOTT, as a small child, standing at the plow handles.

Thomas EMERSON lived out his remaining days with Morgan and Savilla in the old EMERSON house. Tom died in 1938 and was buried in the family cemetary.

I ran across your request for information about Joseph Mitchell EMERSON and Mary SHUTTLESWORTH and children. I am also looking for information about these families. What line do you descend from? I am the great grand-daughter of William Hollis EMERSON and Lora PELL. My grandfather was Charles Everett EMERSON. They lived in Preston County, West Virginia. My grandfather Charles Everett EMERSON was born in Newburg, West Virginia. Wiliiam Hollis EMERSON and Lora PELL had 16 or 17 children together. I have the names of the children somewhere. I know they came from big families. Lora Pell was the daughter of Reason Asbury PELL and Elizabeth Jane SHAY. Elizabeth Jane SHAY was the second wife of Reason A. PELL. Elizabeth was married to Urias BOLYARD and had two children with him. Elizabeth SHAY married Reason PELL who was something like 20+ years her junior. Joseph Mitchell EMERSON was also married twice. His first wife was Nancy FORTNEY who died at a very young age (probaby during child birth or shortly after). Together Joseph Mitchell EMERSON and Nancy FORTNEY had a daughter named Emma EMERSON. Joseph Mitchell EMERSON is also listed in some documents as Micthell Joseph EMERSON or just Mitchell. Joseph Mitchell EMERSON was the son of Sharach EMERSON born 1794 died 1835 and Elizabeth MITCHELL born 1801 death date unknown. I know that Shadrach and Elizabeth came to Virginia (West Virginia) from Pennsylvania but I don't know what town or county. I have other information about some of these families but I have to find it first. If you can give me any infromation about the related families I would appreciate any information you could give to me. I believe that Shadrach EMERSON may have had a brother John EMERSON and a son Nathaniel EMERSON who was born in Kentucky. Please let me know if you might be able to help me with these families.

Thank you

Debbie

FRANK EMERSON.

Frank Emerson, of Yankton, is one of the owners of a modern, up-to-date and complete dairy plant and is conducting a growing and profitable business. A native of Pennsylvania, he was born at Uniontown, March 25, 1880, a son of Aquilla and Ellen (Springer) Emerson, who were also natives of the Keystone state. In the year 1884 the parents brought their family to Dakota territory settling at Freeman, but after a year removed to Yankton In their family were eight children, those besides the subject of this review being: Amanda Jane,

now the wife of Rasmus Peterson, of Yankton county; Springer, who is engaged in the dray and transfer business at Calexico, California; John, a horse dealer at White Owl, South Dakota; Milton R., a farmer of

Moscow, Idaho; Joseph, engaged in the dairy business with his brother Frank; Steve, who is connected with the Guernsey Seed Company of Yankton; and Mrs. Ellery Dunn, of Yankton.

Frank Emerson acquired his education in the public schools of Yankton and after his textbooks were put aside worked upon a farm for seven years, becoming familiar with all of the duties and labors that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. In 1903 he and his brother Joseph began dealing in milk, establishing a dairy business on a very limited capital. Their interests and activities have constantly enlarged and developed and they today own one hundred and eighty acres of land near Yankton. They have a large number of horses and all kinds of modern

machinery to facilitate their work. They have one of the most modern concrete barns in the state, its dimensions being thirty-six by ninety feet, and they use the Hinman milking machines in milking from thirty-five to sixty cows. The most sanitary conditions are observed in the care of the milk and of the stock and as they keep high grade cows the milk which they handle is of excellent quality and they have no difficulty in winning patronage.

In 1907 Frank Emerson was united in marriage to Miss Grace Otis, of Yankton, and they have two daughters, Ruth Viola and Rheta Mae. In his fraternal relations Mr. Emerson is a Modern Woodman, having joined the camp at Mission Hill, South Dakota. He and his family are members of the Methodist church and are in sympathy with movements for the moral progress of the community. In business circles Mr. Emerson has

justly won the proud American title of a self-made man, for on starting out in life he had to spend seven years in the employ of others, receiving but meager wages, yet from that sum he managed to save enough to enable him to start in business. Since then his progress has been continuous and his record is most creditable.
